The event was inaugurated by the late Vera Rich to mark UNESCO Mother Language Day and involves poetry reading in all languages particularly Belarusian and English.
The celebration takes place on Saturday, 10 March 2018 at 3 pm at the Belarusian Religious and Cultural Centre (Marian House, Holden Avenue, London N12 8HS).
PROGRAMME
3pm – talk and presentation by Kristian Roncero Toledo: “Hunting for the gem of the marshes: experiences from fieldwork in Western Polesie”
Kristian is originally Basque, although he is currently doing his PhD in Linguistics at the University of Surrey (Guildford). His research primarily focuses on West Polesian (aka Zaharoddzian) varieties, more specifically the morphology. In order to obtain the data he has gone on three field-trips in several villages in the region of Brest (Belarus), where he has been living with the speakers, recording stories, doing grammar surveys, and even farming with them! He will speak about his research and will answer questions.
3:30 pm – Children’s section. Short poems, stories, or just chat – whatever they would like to do to show off their Belarusian. All children are welcome to participate whether part of the Belarusian school or not and there will be small gifts for all who read.
4 pm – Adults’ section. Read your favourite poem – works of modern poets or old favourites of your choice in Belarusian, English, Scots etc (no need to learn by heart!).Refreshments will be provided throughout. Contributions of food and drink are very welcome.
Entry to the event is free for ABS Members and in order to help cover costs, non-members will be asked to contribute £5.
